Robert DeMott, editor of Working Days: The Journals of the Grapes of Wrath 1938-1941, talks with Don Swaim about John Steinbeck, author of In Dubious Battle, East of Eden, Of Mice and Men, and The Grapes of Wrath, in this 1989 interview. They discuss the humanitarian impulses that lead to Steinbeck's book The Grapes of Wrath, written after he had done ground-breaking investigative reporting on the conditions of migrant workers in California. DeMott traces the writings that led to The Grapes of Wrath, a book that Steinbeck would complete in 99 days. Listen
