Louis L'Amour, a North Dakota native, is the quintessential Renaissance man. He was a merchant seaman, miner, professional boxer, a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the author of over 90 novels, among many others things. He is best known as a novelist of the American West. Some of his novels include Crossfire Trail, Hondo, Last of the Breed and Sackett's Land. He talks with Don Swaim in 1984 about his novel, The Walking Drum. In this novel, he breaks away from the Western themes and takes the reader to 12th Century Asia. L’Amour said he was confident his readers would not be disappointed in the change. Many of his fans have become members of his exclusive club. Approximately 300,000 members have signed up to purchase every one of his leather-bound novels. To hear more about his life and his approach to writing, click on the link below. Listen

For over a decade, many of the best writers of the English language found their way onto Don Swaim's daily two-minute CBS Radio show, Book Beat. His New York-based program was derived from longer interviews, sometimes 40-minutes in length.
