Don Swaim Interviews

Audio Interview with Jonathan Kozol

Jonathan Kozol

Jonathan Kozol, author of Death at an Early Age: The Destruction of the Hearts and Minds of Negro Children in the Boston Public Schools, and Amazing Grace: The Lives of Children and the Conscience of a Nation, says his life has two separate strands: one is his involvement with all kinds of literature and the other is his involvement in teaching young children. He and Don Swaim talk about the state of illiteracy in the United States, which Kozol finds very disappointing. Most of the nation's illiteracy problems are due to living in impoverished areas with a lack of opportunities - a problem that is only worsening.
