Don Swaim Interviews

Audio Interview with John Hartford

John Hartford

Singer and songwriter John Hartford was also a writer and author of Steamboat in a Cornfield. Hartford shares with Swaim about his life working on the river and the serendipitous nature of what would become his writing and musical career.

Steamboat in a Cornfield is a story about just that, a steamboat in a cornfield. The subtitle is "a children's book for children for all ages," as it is designed as a picture book. The story, however, is based on true events. This steamboat was carried into a corn field during severe floods. Once the water receded, the boat remained and later became a tourist attraction and the subject of folk stories and "old-timie" songs.
