Don Swaim Interviews

Audio Interview with James Clavell

While working in the military during World War II, James Clavell was wounded in Malaysia, captured by Japanese troops, and sent to a barbaric Japanese POW camp called Changi for a few years. This experience led to his novel, King Rat, which he discusses in this 1986 interview with Don. He also discusses his novel, Shogun, and the extensive research he did in Japan for the novel. Clavell also explains why he wanted to work in the movie industry, and discusses his first screenplay, The Fly.
