Alfred Kazin, the first winner of the Lifetime Award in Literary Criticism, talks with Don Swaim in this 1984 interview about Kazin's own literary history, his college experiences and his views on contemporary literature. Kazin also discusses his parent's lives, their illiteracy and growing up in Brooklyn during the Depression. Kazin is the author of On Native Grounds and A Walker in the City.
